Roop Kumar and Sunali Rathod’s Contribution to Indian Hindi Ghazals

Ishara, Khushboo, Mitwaa, Mohabbat Ho Gaya, Sunn Zara, Bazm-e-Meer and Velvet Voices, are just some of the duo's many albums which have emblazoned the music circuit with their beautiful Hindi Ghazals and other soulful tracks. Rendered with flawless diction, the albums are a listener's delight. Roop Kumar has sung in the Hindi films such as Gumrah( 1993), Raja(1995 ), Naajayaz (1995), Gaddaar (1995), Bhairavi (1996 ), PremGranth (1996 )etc. But his major breakthrough has been the songs, 'Toh Chalun' and 'Sandesein Aate Hain', from the Hindi film 'Border'; that released in 1997.

Roop Kumar and Sunali Rathod's soulful renditions take the experience of listening to music to an all new level of musical bliss.

Like true romantics, Indian playback singers Roop Kumar and Sunali love nature and travel to different parts of the world to explore nature in her varying hues. It is not just music and travel that create a strong bond between the couple. They are connoisseurs of food and love to indulge in exotic fare. Sunali's other interests extend into the outer realm - astrology and numerology. Roop on the other hand is an avid photographer and photography forms an exciting part of his travelogue.

Their only daughter Reewa performed at the Tejpal Hall when she was just four years old by singing 'Payogi maine Ram ratan dhan payo.' Incidentally, this was the same venue where Roop had vowed audiences at his first performance. A pianist, a singer, and a composer; Reewa has composed the signature tune for Radio City sung by her illustrious parents.

The family's base and training in classical music allows them to sing in a manner that truly makes the music come alive. Sunali being the eternal dreamer comes across as a strong personality while Roop, the pure romanticist, complements her with his compliant nature. While Sunali is open and outgoing, Roop loves the solitude which music provides. Indeed, they're heaven's gift to each other!

Bound by music, the happy and united Rathod family continues to make waves and enthrall the world with their unique musical talent. Music that lingers on; long after the curtains go down!

Roop Kumar Rathod hails from the 'Aditya Gharana of Jamnagar'. He is the son of late Pandit Chaturbhuj Rathod- the Dhrupad Maestro. Dhrupad is a rare and arguably the oldest form of singing. He has two brothers; music composer Shravan Rathod and singer Vinod Rathod. Roop began his career in music as a tabla player and soon became the most sought after tablists. He performed extensively with Anup Jalota as a percussionist and also played the tabla for well-known playback singers Lata Mangeshkar and Pankaj Udhas; who also sang Indian Ghazals. He played for Shyam Benegal's 'Discovery of India', a television serial. Called a 'chaumukha' musician; singing, percussion, and composing are Roop's core strengths. When Music India released Parwaaz, a double album of ghazals, Roop composed, sang, and played the tabla - a rare feat! Roop Kumar was introduced as a playback singer by the music directors Laxmikant - Pyarelal in the Hindi film Angaar. From then on, he has sung a number of film songs; with 'Sandese aate hain', from Border, being one of his greatest hits.
