Born into a family of musicians hailing from Rajasthan, Roopkumar Rathod continues the tradition steeped deep into marvels of Indian classical music. He was the most sought after tabla player at the age of 18, in the early 80's.
After a chance concert with his illustrious father the late Pandit Chaturbhuj Rathod who was a master of the Dhrupad style of singing the tables turned and Roopkumar Rathod entered the field of Ghazals with much aplomb with his very first solo Ghazal album Parwaaz. There was no looking back. In around 1983 he met Sunali another upcoming star on the Ghazal scene and married her in 1989. Ever since then the duo produced several hit albums like Ishara, Mitwa, Khushbu, Mohabbat Ho Gayee, Bazme Meer, Pyaar ka Jashn, Vaada, Mannpasand, Kalma etc. There was more in store for them. After singing for the popular music directors Laxmikant Pyarelal gave Roopkumar Rathod his first break as a playback singer in the film Gumraah, Main Tera Aashiq hoon became a chart buster. The turning point came after Roopkumar Rathod sang Sandese Aate Hai from film Border. This turned the fortune in a big way for the Rathods. Today apart from niche Ghazal concerts they are much in demand for Wedding Concerts, Sufi Concerts and also Bollywood events. Both Sunali Rathod and Roopkumar Rathod have had extensive training in Indian classical music. While Sunali Rathod had the good fortune to learn under the illustrious Pandit Hridaynath Mangeshkar, Ustaad Fayyaz and Niyaz Ahmed of Kirana school of music, Roopkumar Rathod trained under his father and Ustaad Niyaz Ahmed Khansaheb. Both of them still train under a young virtuoso Mubaarak Ali khan of Kirana Gharana. They are blessed with an extremely talented daughter namely Reewa poised to take on the world of music by storm. She is not only a trained pianist but has also learnt two distinctly different styles of singing like Hindustani and Carnatic classical.
Reewa is a distinction holder in 8 grades classical piano from Royal Associated Board, London. Recipient of the SUR JYOTSNA national award 2014 as an outstanding emerging talent, she is a composer, singer, lyric writer and a programmer she has composed several songs combining all three styles of music namely Hindustani, Carnatic and Western. One of her song ENROUTE GANESHAA that can be viewed on YouTube will soon be released on Buddha Bar label this year. She performs extensively with legendary singers like Shri. Hariharan, Taufiq Qureshi etc.
